Education Required
Becoming a cardiologist takes a lot of time and dedication, but the end
result is very fulfilling. In total a person would spend about 10 years
after high school studying, taking exams, and getting prepared for what lies
ahead of them in the medical field. To become a cardiologist you must have
completed 4 years in medical school , the basic requirement for any doctor. But before getting into medical school you must have obtained a bachelors
degree. Then a minimum of 3 years of residency is required. This allows the
future cardiologists to get a hands-on-experience under supervision
provided by other physicians. After that depending on whichever area of
cardiology you wish to follow you'd then join a fellowship program
which is approximately 3 years. If you would prefer not to specialize in
anything you could just become a general cardiologist and be done with
school all together. They treat a range of all different kinds of problems
dealing with the heart. If you would like to go even further and specialize
even more there are always more options like an interventional cardiologist,
transplant cardiologist, electro physiologist, pediatric cardiologist, or a
cardiovascular surgeon. Either one is still considered to be a cardiologist.
